Yes, that's Bill Chaplik back when he was a clerk and I was the dispatcher. Odd, he left English teaching to work on the railroad and I did the opposite. I did not meet Clarke until shortly after he lost the weight, but I heard he was a big guy for some time. I hired when Bill Young was division operator and left in 1982. I still see some of the "old timers" now again.

WOW! I came across these pix by accident, and it was great to finally match a face to names I had only heard of, or seen on a roster, or been yelled at by on the phone . Of course, EVERYONE knew GOD a/k/a W.C. Young, who was my union rep for a while. If I remember the story correctly, George Opie could throw the levers at JO with his feet! (according to Frank Cruise.) I believe image 53 to be Bill Chaplik--variously Rules Examiner, Division Operator, etc. I wish I could have seen Clarke Hampe when he was fat and smoked cigars.

I was an Operator from 1985-1994, and a Dispatcher until 2001. I spent most of my career with Amtrak looking forward to being able to quit, and the next nine years at NY City Transit wishing I had never left.
